Oxford University conducted research and it shows, among other things, that we prefer rest in the workplace over free food. It is remarkable that young people in particular are annoyed by noise.

We already wrote that sound influences your productivity sooner about. But where does all that noise come from? Coworkers talking on the phone, loud ringtones, noisy discussions, beeping computers and tapping keyboards is the first thing you might think of in an office environment. But what about air conditioners, fluorescent lights, cars rushing by or a plane that looks low?

Fewer distractions thanks to “white noise”

Noise in the office garden; it drives us crazy en masse. Oxford University investigated it. This shows, among other things, that we prefer rest in the workplace over free food. It is remarkable that young people in particular are annoyed by noise. Headphones with music bring some rest to the noisy day, but listening to so-called “white noise” can also help. By listening to the sounds of the rain, a waterfall or the ocean, you can focus on one constant sound. As a result, you are less distracted by all the other sounds around you. Make sure you don't fall asleep, because white noise is also very good for that.

Hundreds of heart attacks per year

RTL News analyzed how many houses in the Netherlands are in too noisy places according to World Health Organization standards. Too noisy in this case means that more than 55 decibels of ambient noise is experienced. That appears to be more than a third. Of course, there are also office buildings between those houses. According to research by the World Health Organization, noise is one of the biggest dangers to our living environment. according Fred Woudenberg, head of the living environment department at the GGD Amsterdam, hundreds of people a year have a heart attack due to noise: “If you experience noise pollution for a long time, your blood pressure can rise, develop heart disease and eventually have a heart attack.”

Even Seneco suffered from it

One small consolation: even Seneco — Roman writer and stoic philosopher — suffered from noise pollution. As early as the first century AD, he wrote a letter to a contemporary about his noisy life above a bath facility. Of course, that does not mean that we should just resign ourselves to those noisy office spaces. With acoustic wall panels, partitions, ceiling panels or special furniture, you can bring peace back to your cable office without major renovation.
