Sports classes at Erasmus College are now a breath of fresh air thanks to good acoustics

Recently, we improved the acoustics in the gymnasiums at Erasmus College Zoetermeer. The acoustics are often not doing well in gymnasiums. This regularly leads to serious complaints among teachers and students. This was also the case at Erasmus College. The acoustic improvements have a huge positive effect! This is not only evident from the enthusiastic reactions of the users, but is also objectively demonstrated in the acoustic measurements.

Physical Education (LO) for all classes
From the first to the exam class, a lot of sports is done at Erasmus. Students receive Physical Education in all classes. Real sports enthusiasts can also choose the LO II and BSM exam subjects in the upper classes of MAVO, HAVO and VWO. There are sports tournaments in all grades. Erasmus participates in major national sporting events and organises its own sports activities. And even after school, there is a lot of sport in the sports halls.

Extensive sports facilities
The Erasmus has three LO halls with professional sports floors and an extensive interior. They also have access to a large sports hall with all possible facilities. There is even a climbing wall in one of the gymnasiums. With (video) equipment, movement can be recorded for analysis, there is (sturdy) sound equipment for 'dance' and instruments to measure fitness, heart rate, blood pressure, etc.

Acoustic optimization
At Akoesta, we optimize the acoustics of gymnasiums and sports halls based on the door NOC-NSF published guidelines. By means of a acoustic measurement (the baseline measurement), we mapped out the acoustic situation at Erasmus. The most important variables that determine the acoustic experience in a room are the reverberation time and the noise levels that occur. Based on the acoustic measurement, we determined how many acoustic adjustments are needed in the sports halls and which solutions are most suitable.

Acoustic solutions
For the Erasmus gymnasiums, we have chosen two types acoustic wall panels, both designed specifically for gymnasiums. Most panels have a plain fabric in a neutral color. A number of acoustic wall panels feature beautiful visuals of athletes in action. One of them is white so that the images from the beamer can be projected onto it. The panels are custom-made, so that the acoustic solutions are fully adapted to the situation at Erasmus. The acoustic wall panels are ideal for the gym, they can take a beating and are made so you won't get hurt. For example, the gymnasiums at Erasmus are a pleasant and comfortable space for exercising and teaching.

A wonderful result
The LO section is extremely excited about the acoustic improvements! They indicate that it is wonderful to teach. The calm in the sports lessons is back and everyone is easy to hear. And that means that the vocal cords are spared and there are no further hearing damage. The data from the post-measurement carried out also shows that the acoustic parameters and the target values used in the gymnasiums have been achieved.

What a breath of fresh air, what a difference!!! What a wonderful teaching, what a rest, students being able to hear well, saving their voice, no further hearing damage. Tribute!
