The better your concentration, the better your performance. Unfortunately, the average office environment isn't the ideal place to concentrate, especially when it's an office garden. But there are a number of things you can do yourself that help you focus better on your task.

1 Do one thing

By that, of course, we mean that you have to do one thing at a time. Multitasking doesn't work, focus does work. According to a Stanford University study, multitasking can even damage your brain. Focus on one thing and give it your undivided attention. This applies to your work, but of course also to other situations. Enjoy your food, play consciously with your children, and listen to your partner with full attention.

2 Work with targets

According to neuropsychologist Erik Scherder and organizational psychologist Kilian Wawoe, both from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, you are at your best at work when you have energy. If you don't have that for a while, make sure you have realistic targets. You can see exactly how that works and what your locus coerulus has to do with it in this video!

3 Take a rest

Resting your head makes you feel more energetic and allows you to concentrate better. Take three minutes to breathe in and out consciously. You don't have to do that in the lotus position, floating above a mat, you can just sit on your office chair, during a short outdoor walk or — if you're lucky enough to have a such a cool workplace to have — in a concentration room.

4 Limit incentives

We receive information all day long. Try to watch a little less on your phone or TV. By being more selective in the information you consume, you also get more peace of mind, which in turn improves your concentration.

5 Move

More exercise gives you more energy, but you also get more energy from being outside. Especially in the dark winter, there is a chance that your skin gets too little daylight and that you produce too little vitamin D. This is not only bad for bones and teeth, but also for your immune system. And that, in turn, can cause lethargy. When you exercise, you also produce the protein BDNF. BDNF stimulates your brain, which improves your memory and allows you to learn new things faster.

6 Maintain healthy indoor air

Fresh air helps you focus. But unfortunately, in many workplaces, the air is not so fresh. On the platform of Healthy Indoor Air you'll find seven tips for improving indoor air in the office.

7 Make sure you have good acoustics

Music can help you relax and makes you more energetic and productive. If you can't or don't want to listen to music in the office, at least make sure you have good acoustics. This also ensures better productivity and lower absenteeism.
